Winners of the “Best-Kept Property in Preiļi Municipality” competition honoured

On 22 August, as part of the Preiļi Municipality celebrations, at the end of the lively festive parade of institutions, businesses, services and
organised groups of residents, the municipality honoured the participants and winners of the 2015 “Best-Kept
Property in Preiļi Municipality” competition. As a token of appreciation, the participants received flowers, diplomas and cash prizes, while the
first-place winners received plaques to be attached to their properties, certifying the title of the best-kept property in Preiļi Municipality in
2015.

The competition was held in the municipality for the fourth year. This year, twelve properties were
entered for evaluation in various categories. They were assessed by a five-member commission comprising Vita Patmalniece, Head of the Real
Estate Division of the Preiļi Municipality Council; Zenta Igolniece, Head of the Utilities Division of SIA “Preiļu saimnieks”; Anna
Buka, co-owner of the “Avotu ozoli” farm in Preiļi Parish; Dagnija Mālniece, plant grower at the “Kalēji” farm; and the winner of first place
in the 2014 “Best-Kept Property in Preiļi Municipality” competition in the category of farmsteads in parish areas,
Albīna Pauniņa. As usual, the properties were evaluated in four categories, assessing the tidiness and overall appearance of the grounds,
the exterior appearance and suitability of buildings and structural elements, the functional layout of the garden,
flowerbeds and ornamental shrubs, environmentally friendly management, as well as the individuality of the property.

In the category “Family Homes in Urban and Village Areas”, first place was awarded to

Jāzeps Bogotajs for the “Klintaines” property in Prīkuļi village, Saunas Parish. The owner has preserved and enhanced the traditions of this well-kept property
with great care and affection. A greenhouse with abundant clusters of red tomatoes fits organically into the garden, alongside unusually
coloured hydrangeas in full bloom, a small pond with water lilies and the Latvian flag flying from a flagpole. Second place
went to the Puduls family’s “Vēris” property in Smelteri village, Saunas Parish. This rural homestead, with apple trees
and berry bushes planted within the village, welcomes guests with a splendid bed of red roses,
yellow cinquefoil bushes and an extensive collection of gladioli. Third place was awarded to
the Rubin family’s property at 29 Skolas Street in Pelēči. Although the owner is a busy woman, she has
found time to create a pleasant environment for herself and her family, with beautiful beds of rudbeckias and
ornamental shrubs.

In the category “Farmsteads in Parish Areas”, the commission named Lidija Jurkjāne’s

“Ainas” property in Aizkalne Parish the winner. A rural homestead that is very beautiful and well-kept in its simplicity, it is home to and managed by several generations. A
spacious and tasteful yard has been cultivated, complemented by a romantic black sauna with a thatched roof and tastefully designed flowerbeds adorned with
a wide variety of flowers and other plantings. Second place in the category went to the Linkevičs family’s
“Linsētas” property in Pelēči Parish. A new, beautiful and spacious ancestral property managed by industrious people.
The property offers a magnificent landscape of hills, large, well-kept ponds, pine plantings,
a rock garden created by the owner himself and splendid flowerbeds lovingly tended by the owner’s wife, with lilies,
roses and rhododendrons. The third-best property in this category was “Palmas”,
managed by the Kļavinsku family. A large rural homestead, broad fields, livestock, machinery and a Latgale flag proudly flying
from a flagpole—everything has its place! The yard is adorned with a beautiful gazebo entwined with red
flowering beans and splendid flowerbeds. The Bricis family received an appreciation award for participating in the competition in this group
for their “Strauti” property in Saunas Parish. The property has participated in the competition for the third year,
inviting visitors to view the beautiful house and spacious grounds, where the landscaping work already begun can be continued.
Andris Kažemāks, owner of the “Ielejas” property in Aizkalne Parish, also received an appreciation award. The owner
and his girlfriend have participated in the competition for the third consecutive year and also won a prize-winning
place last year. The property is large and well-kept, and many improvements have been made over the year, including a simple but very beautiful branch fence
that blends exceptionally naturally into the surrounding landscape, just like the lush rabbit hopping freely in the wild, the group of cats and the dog.
A beautiful environment created with modest means but abundant imagination and patient work. The Gribonis family’s “Ozoli Gribinānos” property in Saunas Parish
also received an appreciation award for participating in the farmstead category. It belongs to one of the municipality’s largest grain-growing families. A large and spacious rural property
comes into view, home to several generations who continue to shape and improve the grounds. The property reflects a wonderful
Latvian flatland landscape and beautiful plantings.

In the category “Institutions, Organisations and Companies”, only one

participant was entered—the “Novadnieks” newspaper property at 14 Brīvības Street in Preiļi. The jury decided that the editorial
team should receive an appreciation award for participating in the competition and a gift voucher. The property has a beautiful
and charming entrance path, pleasant and tasteful flowerbeds, and a lovingly tended magnolia that is
dressed in a warm coat in winter so that it can delight everyone with its picturesque blossoms in spring. The grounds are small but very
thoughtfully arranged. The jury was touched by the editorial team’s consideration for its neighbours—by sacrificing
a little of the beauty, they have cut an opening in the hedge so that sunlight can shine into the neighbours’ windows.
In the category “State and Municipal Institutions”, two schools were entered this year—the Priekuļi and
Sala primary schools. The jury decided that both schools should receive an appreciation award and a gift
voucher for participating in the competition. Sala Primary School has very spacious and well-appointed grounds of almost 3 hectares, which, as always,
are exceptionally well-kept and feature themes characteristic of a school. Priekuļi Primary School has also gained more attractive surroundings following the completed street
renovation works, and the flowerbeds in the school grounds have visibly been enhanced.

The Preiļi Municipality Council thanks the competition participants for their responsiveness, as well as those who
nominated the property of a friend, neighbour or relative that brings joy to passers-by every day!
