“Sweet Sun in the Fountain of Elijah”
In celebration of the solstice and the successful realization of the project “Sweet Sun in the Fountain of Elijah” supported by SCHWENK Latvia, on June 21, 2024, a sun dial unveiling event will take place at the Jaņa Rozentāls Saldus History and Art Museum.
12:30 – opportunityto listen to a presentation by sun dial specialist Dr.sc.comp. Mārtiņš Giļs about sun dials and time measurement (Rozentāls' Tower of Dreams)
13:15– ceremonial part of the event
13:31– unveiling of the sun dial
Precisely at 13:31, Saldus will experience the true moment of midday. It is the moment when the Sun is directly south, dividing the day into two equal parts. Historically in Latvia, until 1899, local solar time was used, marking the midday moment at 12:00. This local time system was in operation during Jaņa Rozentāls' lifetime, including when the work “From the Church” was created, a time when local time was still observed throughout the territory of Latvia.
The ambiance of the solstice event will be enhanced by the “Strops” chapel.
You are warmly invited to celebrate together with the Jaņa Rozentāls Saldus History and Art Museum!
