During the winter months, all residents of Latvia—both women and men—should pay increased attention to home skin care, says Dr Ludmila Stavro-Freiberga, a professional cosmetologist with twenty years of experience and director of the PanaceaPro beauty clinic.
Changing weather conditions, dry indoor air, complaints of itching and increased skin sensitivity are only the visible tip of the iceberg. These symptoms may indicate hidden skin problems and accelerated ageing processes. However, the situation can be changed by following a few simple tips.
Use less aggressive products when washing
This applies especially to the face. Regardless of what you used to wash with before, switch to cleansing milk. It is the only fat-containing product that cleanses the skin without drying it out. It is also important to use the milk correctly—apply a small amount to your hands and massage it evenly into the skin of the face, neck and décolleté for 2–3 minutes, then remove the excess milk with cosmetic sponges moistened with warm water.
As for washing the body and taking a shower—it may sound strange, but if you have the option of “skipping an unnecessary wash”, it is better not to wash at all. The harm caused by frequent washing is so great that, especially in winter, it is better to be slightly dirty than dehydrated or excessively dry.
Cosmetologists have a special term—“winter xerosis of the skin”. This means that the skin is dry and urgently needs moisturising.
Listen to your body
Many people have no skin problems regardless of the season, and our bodies give us no signals either—and that is good! However, during the winter months, especially after taking a shower, you may sometimes feel the need to apply something to your skin and moisturise it. In this case, it is definitely worth listening to this feeling.
To moisturise the skin after taking a shower, it is recommended to use natural oils. During the summer, by contrast, oils should be avoided. In summer, oils oxidise in the air, may create a feeling of “greasiness” and even give off an unpleasant smell. A greasy feeling on the skin is not particularly pleasant at any time of year.
Natural oils also have a warming effect—it feels warmer! To ensure that the body is well and properly supplied with everything it needs, oils should be applied to damp skin. It may seem like a minor detail, but it will significantly improve how you feel.
How often should moisturising cream be applied?
During the winter months, it is important not to apply cream immediately before going outside. There must be an interval between applying the cream and leaving the premises—at least half an hour. As a rule, we like creams that absorb quickly, but they have a high water content. If there is water on your face while the temperature outside is below zero, that is not good!
Many people switch to thicker creams in winter. This is a very correct and sensible approach, also recommended by cosmetologists.
