If previously not as much attention was paid to whether only the intended materials were placed in separate waste collection containers, the situation is different this year. The waste management operator in the Priekule Municipality has changed and is strictly monitoring whether the containers contain only the designated waste. If mixed household waste is placed in a container, its contents are considered contaminated and can no longer be sorted in the intended manner. Consequently, the costs paid from the municipal budget—in other words, from our shared funds—for the removal of household waste containers increase. By contrast, the removal of separate waste collection containers is free of charge.   

We ask the residents of Priekule Municipality to sort waste responsibly! Recently, many cases have been identified in which household waste, construction waste and other unsuitable items have been placed in containers intended for glass, paper or plastic. A video surveillance camera has been installed on Tirgoņu Street in Priekule to record irresponsible behaviour resulting in the contamination of separate waste collection container contents. Increased attention will also be paid to monitoring containers elsewhere.

We would also like to remind you that it is important to follow certain waste-sorting principles. The most common mistake is placing glass containers in the glass container together with a plastic bag. In this case, the contents are considered contaminated because the operator has no way to separate the plastic from the pieces of glass. The simplest solution is to place bottles and jars in the container—they may be broken—and put the bag in the container next to it. 

It is important to remember that not all glass products may be placed in separate waste collection containers. Drinking glasses, glass and ceramic dishes, window glass, vehicle glass, tempered glass and other products made of fragile materials must not be placed in containers intended for glass! 

We remind you that plastic packaging must be free of food residue. If you do not have the time or opportunity to rinse it, it is better to throw it in the household waste container straight away. It often happens that cardboard packaging, paper or PET bottles are placed in containers inside tied, opaque plastic bags, which makes it impossible to visually check their contents. It is better to put sorted waste in transparent bags or empty the waste out of the bags before disposal.  

It is not uncommon for containers intended for paper, cardboard and plastic packaging to become full ahead of schedule. This happens because residents often fail to flatten waste before placing it in the container. Simply compress cardboard boxes and PET bottles with your foot to significantly reduce their volume. This will allow the container to hold much more waste.

Let us respect our land and its natural resources, save our shared funds and sort waste responsibly! We very much hope that it will not be necessary to resort to the ultimate measure and stop using separate waste collection containers because of residents’ irresponsibility. If the containers are not filled as intended, their contents are considered contaminated, and the operator charges a high fee for their removal. Let us carefully monitor what we throw into separate waste collection containers!
