The “Sloka” Team Springs a Surprise and Triumphs in the “Seni Cup 2016” Five-a-Side Football Tournament for People with Special Needs
The “Sloka” players surprised everyone present with their performance—the team has participated in the tournament for only the second year and managed to rise from second-to-last place in the 2015 tournament to the top of the podium this year. On 6 July, the winners of the national tournament will travel to represent Latvia internationally at the “Seni Cup” final tournament in the Polish city of Toruń, where they will compete against participants from Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The “Sloka” and “Ziedkalne” teams met in the final for the “Seni Cup” trophy. Although the “Ziedkalne” players were the first to score, the “Sloka” footballers controlled the ball for most of the match, enabling them to convincingly defeat last year’s leaders.
The 2014 champions, VSAC “Mēmele”, won third place in the tournament, defeating the VSAC Zemgale branch “Iecava” 6:1 in their match. The remaining places were taken, respectively, by the VSAC branches: “Iļģi”, “Ezerkrasti”, “Jelgava”, “Rūja”, “Krastiņi”, “Dundaga”, DAC Ogre, “Ķīši”, “Ropaži”, “Veģi” and “Aizvīķi”. To ensure fair play, the teams were divided into three groups—A, B and C—according to the participants’ physical fitness and health condition.
