Traffic restrictions expected in Olaine this Sunday during the Latvian Cycling Festival

On Sunday, 20 August, the large-scale Latvian Cycling Festival for cycling enthusiasts of all ages will take place in Olaine for the third consecutive year, offering four exciting road cycling routes. To ensure that the sporting event runs smoothly, several significant traffic restrictions will be introduced in Olaine and Mārupe municipalities on this day.

On the road sections in Olaine where, from 20 August 2017, 11:15–16:30, the State Police and volunteers wearing bright green vests will regulate, restrict or, if necessary, close vehicle traffic:

Road cycling race route:

Olaine – Zemgales Street (from Parka Street) – Rīgas Street – A8 – A5 – Daugavas Street – Liliju Street – Rožu Street – Mārupītes Drive – Vecozolu Street – Tīraines Street – old Jelgava Highway (Jelgava Road) ––– A5 (3 laps) – A8 – turn towards Jauntīreļi – Jelgavas Street – Rīgas Street – Zemgales Street (up to Parka Street).

The route starts at 11:15; the time limit for completing it is 2.5 hours. The time gap from the first rider in the main group to the last is 10 minutes (the length of the peloton).

Public road cycling route:

Olaine – Zemgales Street (from Parka Street) – Rīgas Street – A8 – A5 – Daugavas Street – Liliju Street – Rožu Street – Mārupītes Drive – Vecozolu Street – Tīraines Street – old Jelgava Highway (Jelgava Road) ––– A5 – A8 – turn towards Jauntīreļi – Jelgavas Street – Rīgas Street – Zemgales Street (up to Parka Street).

The planned start time for the route is 14:00; the time limit for completing it is 2.5 hours.

On the road sections in Mārupe where, from 20 August 2017, 11:45–13:45, the State Police and volunteers wearing bright green vests will regulate, restrict or, if necessary, close vehicle traffic:

·         Daugavas Street – from the Salaspils Bypass to Liliju Street;

·         Liliju Street – from Daugavas Street to Rožu Street;

·         Rožu Street – from Liliju Street to Mārupītes Drive;

·         Mārupītes Drive – from Rožu Street to Vecozolu Street;

·         Vecozolu Street – from Mārupītes Drive to Jelgava Road;

·         Jelgava Road – from Vecozola Street to the Salaspils Bypass;

Traffic restrictions while escorting the athletes:

When groups of athletes are being escorted, traffic is stopped in both directions at that particular moment if the group occupies both lanes of the carriageway. If the groups are small, only the lane in the direction of travel is stopped.

The road closure is temporary, as the athletes travel at speeds of 42–46 km/h and mainly in large groups (up to 100 athletes).

The movement of emergency vehicles is not impeded during the competition. The competition is stopped at such times.

The Latvian Cycling Festival in Olaine is organised by the sports event agency “Alpha Baltic Sport” in cooperation with the Olaine Municipal Council and the Latvian Cycling Federation. AS Olainfarm supports sports activities and a healthy lifestyle. Prizes are provided by Atlētika, Rasēns, Valmieras piens, Silvanols, Olainfarm, Tonuss Elast, SIS sports nutrition, Kivvi cosmetics and the Latvijas aptieka pharmacy chain. The total competition prize fund exceeds €1,600.
