Ventspils fountains to be awakened this week
To delight the residents of Ventspils and the city’s visitors with 10
spectacular city fountains, the Municipal Administration is currently inspecting
and preparing them so that they can be switched on as early as 17 April.
This month, the city fountains are undergoing preventive maintenance of their engine mechanisms, the pools are being cleaned, the decorative elements of the fountains are being cleared of deposits and polished, and all the technological equipment removed for the winter is being installed. At the same time, as maintenance work is carried out on the elements of the “Whale Frigate” fountain in Great Square, flags are being hung from the masts.
The compositional design of this fountain is based on information found in historical visual materials concerning the exterior appearance of the sailing ship “Whale”, which was part of Duke Jacob’s fleet—including the ship’s parameters, such as the number and height of its masts, its overall length, and configuration. The fountain consists of 20 masts, 8 yards, and a flagpole, equipped with lighting and mist effects.
The fountains are switched on once the weather conditions have stabilised, that is, when the average daily temperature is no lower than +5 degrees Celsius. However, the “MATRIX” fountain will be awakened at the beginning of the summer season at Ventspils Adventure Park.
Residents and city visitors will be able to enjoy the following fountains in Ventspils:
- “Whale Frigate” fountain in Great Square;
- “Umbrella” fountain in Newspaper Alley;
- “Sun Boats” fountain in New Town Square;
- “Millstone” fountain in Mill Square;
- “Drops” fountain near Ventspils University of Applied Sciences;
- “Ship Watcher” fountain on the Ostas Street promenade;
- “Dune Pine” fountain in the centre of Pārventa;
- “MATRIX” fountain at Ventspils Adventure Park;
- Floating fountain in the Vidumupīte River near Lielais Prospekts;
- Floating fountain in the pond near Reņķa Garden.
