On Friday, 4 May, to mark the anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia, Jūrmala hosted the Independence Day cycling ride, which has become a tradition and once again brought together hundreds of cycling enthusiasts from across Latvia and the Baltics. Alongside professional cyclists, large and small enthusiasts of the sport, as well as families with children, lined up at the start. In parallel with the competitions held in a solemn atmosphere, participants also enjoyed a varied entertainment programme, spending the spring day in a sporty and positively invigorating atmosphere.

The first competition, the 0.5–1 km Children’s Ride, started at 10.00 a.m., with a large number of the most active young riders aged up to 12 taking part. This was followed by the challenging 30 km Open Distance. After an intense contest, victory went to Jānis Rubiks of the TEAM ZZK team, with a time of 42 minutes and 26 seconds. Finishing immediately behind him was last year’s winner, Arvils Vikštrems of the ELKOR team, who also completed the distance in 42 minutes and 26 seconds, trailing the leader by just one millisecond. Finally, the third fastest to cross the finish line was Juris Visockis of the DOLTCINI Latvia Cycling Team (0:42:26), who conceded two milliseconds to the second-place finisher.

In the women’s competition, the clear winner was Daniela Leitāne, representing the Dobele Sports School, with a time of 42 minutes and 33 seconds. Renāte Rodionova of the Carnikava Sports Centre took second place (0:42:42), while third place overall went to Evelīna Ermane-Marčenko, a rider for the strong Dobele Sports School team (0:42:44).

In the second half of the day, participants in the popular Family Distance gathered at the start and delighted those present. Representing several generations, they completed a colourful 15 km parade ride, demonstrating their teams’ unity and original costumes. The fastest overall male rider in the Family Distance was Ēriks Strazdiņš, with a time of 29 minutes and 28 seconds. In the women’s competition, Olga Zaharova triumphed, finishing in  29 minutes and 51 seconds.

Alongside the competitions, various exciting entertainment activities awaited cycling participants and visitors throughout the day at the event venue near the Dzintari Concert Hall – creative workshops and games for children, mobile sales stalls, and the unifying White Tablecloth Celebration. DJ Kārlis and the event’s entertaining host, Lauris Lizbovskis, also helped maintain a positive atmosphere throughout the day.

The organisers of the competition thank all participants and supporters, and especially the police and emergency medical services, who took care of the visitors’ safety throughout the event.

The Independence Day cycling ride was organised by SIA “Alpha Baltic Media” in cooperation with the Latvian Association of Popular Sports; the event was supported by the City of Jūrmala.
