Then and Now: 30 Years of the Latvian National Guard
From June 7 to June 25 in the center of Cēsis, at the square behind the Victory monument, a travelling exhibition 'Then and Now: 30 Years of the Latvian National Guard' is on display.
It reflects the development of the National Guard from its inception on August 23, 1991, to the present day. Over these years, the National Guard has evolved into the largest structure of the National Armed Forces and the foundation of state defense. Equipment, technical support, and training opportunities for the National Guard have also improved.
However, one thing has remained consistently unchanged - the willingness of individuals of different ages and professions to serve under the united flag of the Latvian National Guard, with a common goal to protect Latvia's independence and freedom.
National Guard units are present throughout Latvia - in Vidzeme, Zemgale, Latgale, and Kurzeme. More than 10,000 selfless Latvian citizens have already acquired and continue to enhance the skills necessary for our country's defense in their free time, apart from their main occupations - work or studies.
National Guards not only fulfill defense tasks but also assist in crucial tasks for Latvian society, such as providing support in search and rescue operations, disposing of explosive objects, participating in rescue operations, firefighting, flood recovery, as well as supporting state and municipal institutions in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
To join the National Guard, a candidate must call the unified application phone number 1811 or personally visit the nearest unit in their training or residential area. More information can be found on the website www.zs.mil.lv.
