From 14 to 16 May, the “LMT IoT Hackathon” will take place in Riga for the second time as part of the satellite programme of TechChill, the Baltic region’s leading technology industry event. The hackathon will highlight the ever-growing potential of Internet of Things solutions on the mobile communications network. This year, the main focus of the online event will be various new sensor solutions for the challenges of today’s business environment and residents’ everyday lives, providing an unprecedented opportunity to use LMT’s Internet of Things management platform.

As part of the hackathon, LMT, in cooperation with TechChill, will offer technology enthusiasts the opportunity to gain experience in finding applications for the Internet of Things (IoT), for example, to increase companies’ operational efficiency, develop new business models and solutions that are important to society, improve user experience and attract potential customers. Everyone is invited to apply for the hackathon—including IT professionals and digitalisation process architects, as well as designers and business and marketing specialists.

“With the development of the new-generation 5G network, sensors and the Internet of Things are among the fastest-growing new business niches. Latvia is an excellent place to develop and test the latest technologies, as we have highly developed infrastructure—both of the latest-generation Internet of Things networks are available commercially. At this hackathon, we will offer an exclusive opportunity to try out the LMT IoT platform before it becomes commercially available, in order to create various sensor solutions and applications. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to create new, exportable solutions together with industry experts,” comments LMT Vice President Ingmārs Pūķis.

“We live in a time when many things are smart, and we should find ways to use their full potential. One possibility is to combine these things on a common platform, which can be used not only to control specific smart devices but also to create unique solutions that work together. Therefore, the aim of this year’s hackathon is to create new and broadly applicable smart-home and smart-city solutions that we may be able to integrate into our everyday lives in the near future,” adds Ernests Štāls, a member of the TechChill board.

Applications for the hackathon can be submitted until 13 May, and approximately 50 participants are expected to take part. Working in teams, they will explore new possibilities offered by IoT devices in order to unlock the full potential of sensor technologies. Teams will be able to participate both by connecting their own devices to the network and by using devices that have already been deployed in the urban environment. In the final stage, the hackathon’s most promising participants will have the opportunity to present their creative solutions on the virtual stage of TechChill 2021 before an audience of more than 2,000 attendees, including investors, media representatives and potential employers.
