The Former Chemical Fibre Plant Complex Is Being Demolished
The Chemical Fibre Plant occupies a large area in Daugavpils’s Northern Industrial Zone, which, in turn, continues to develop rapidly. The infrastructure is being improved here, and practically all the necessary utilities have been connected to the production buildings.
The chemical fibre plant was built in Daugavpils at the beginning of the 1960s and later gave its name to an entire urban neighbourhood—the “Chemists’ Village.” More than 5,000 people worked in production, and the enterprise was one of the largest in the Latvian SSR. The plant went bankrupt in the mid-1990s, and it was decided to establish an industrial park on its territory. Several other companies are now located around the former Chemical Fibre Plant buildings, and they should not experience any inconvenience as a result of the demolition of the large complex.
The fact that the work is being carried out in winter is not accidental—this season is best suited to the dismantling of large buildings. However, at present, neither the municipality nor the owners are prepared to forecast when the demolition will be completed or what will later be built on the site.
After the work is completed, the builders and the client will have to submit a report to the City Construction Board stating how much ordinary and hazardous waste, as well as metal structures, was transported and where it was taken.
