At present, the quantity of COVID-19 vaccines in Latvia is sufficient to ensure an intensive vaccination pace – Pfizer (Comirnaty) 393960 doses, Moderna (Spikevax) – 100300 doses, AstraZeneca (Vaxzervia) - 198460 doses. Delivery of Janssen vaccines is expected during the coming week.

“We constantly monitor the vaccines’ storage temperature, expiry dates and usage dynamics. Vaccine deliveries are flexibly adjusted to demand – for example, Astra Zeneca deliveries are currently on hold. We have also requested that Pfizer vaccine deliveries be put on hold until Latvia places a new order, and this, in turn, depends on the vaccination rate in the country,” says Armīns Kalniņš, logistics coordinator of the Vaccination Project Division of the National Health Service.

“Our strategy is to carefully monitor the expiry dates of the stocks and promptly propose that the Cabinet of Ministers adopt decisions on donating vaccines. Vaccines are still in short supply in many parts of the world, and it is also important to consider international solidarity – the entire world is facing the threats posed by COVID-19, and every donation gives people the opportunity to receive vaccines, protecting themselves and those around them,” emphasizes Eva Juhņēviča, head of the Vaccination Project of the National Health Service.

AstraZeneca vaccine Vaxzervia stocks amount to 198460 doses. In accordance with a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, 165 600 doses will be donated to Moldova, Albania, Tunisia and Kenya, where AstraZeneca vaccines for first and second doses are in acute short supply. 32 990 doses are reserved for providing booster vaccines to the population of Latvia.

The nearest date on which the expiry date of any vaccine currently in Latvia’s stocks will be reached is 31 August  – these are 50400 AstraZeneca Vaxzervia doses, which are scheduled to be sent to Tunisia, the recipient country, within the next few weeks; the expiry dates of the remaining vaccines from this manufacturer are 31 October and 30 November of this year. The expiry dates of “Moderna” vaccines are December of this year and January 2022, while the expiry date of the Pfizer vaccine stocks is 31 October of this year.
