Coastal fishermen from Carnikava and Saulkrasti to be interviewed this summer. Their stories to be digitised

The project “Preservation and Promotion of Fishing Traditions and Intangible Cultural Heritage on the Vidzeme Coast” has been launched in the Carnikava and Saulkrasti municipalities. The project’s partner organisations, the PPP association “Sernikon” and the association “Jūrkante”, simply call it “The Vidzeme Fisherman”.

During the project, the experience stories and interviews of fishermen from the coastal areas of our municipalities will be recorded, and a digital tool will be developed. It will feature both the stories collected during the project and cultural and tourism sites connected with fishing in the municipalities, presented in 3D format.

The project will place considerable emphasis on intergenerational interaction, with fishermen’s experience, stories and skills being passed on to the younger generation of the municipalities—school students. The project partners plan both to promote cultural heritage associated with the sea and to encourage young people to pursue a career as fishermen. The digital tool will also make a significant contribution to promoting the municipalities’ tourism potential: in a modern way, every visitor will be able to learn about the municipalities’ history and people, while also helping to increase the number of visits to sites of cultural and historical significance.

The involvement of interested parties is important for the successful implementation of the project, so we particularly invite the Carnikava Local History Centre, the Saulkrasti Tourism Centre, Saulkrasti Secondary School and Zvejniekciems Secondary School to cooperate with us.
