Development of an Explanatory Dictionary of Educational Terms

To develop educational terminology and promote a common understanding, an online explanatory dictionary of educational terms in Latvian, with equivalents of the terms in foreign languages, will be developed by November 2022. This is provided for by the cooperation agreement concluded at the end of June 2021 between the Ministry of Education and Science and the University of Liepāja on the implementation of the study “Online Explanatory Dictionary of Educational Terms”. In this study, the University of Liepāja will cooperate with Rīga Stradiņš University and the University of Latvia.

The study plans to create an online explanatory dictionary of educational terms comprising 3,000 entries, coordinated with the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. In addition to Latvian, equivalents of the terms will be available in English, German, French and Russian.

Clarifying educational terminology is important in educational research. It is significant for developing international cooperation, preparing publications in foreign languages and creating international projects. Terminology is also essential for developing the research skills of students studying education sciences.

During the study, the educational terminology incorporated into existing databases, dictionaries of terms and regulatory documents will also be identified, and proposals will be provided regarding the principles for updating the terminology.

The dictionary will be available electronically on the National Terminology Portal of Latvia at www.termini.gov.lv.

The study “Online Explanatory Dictionary of Educational Terms” is being conducted with the support of the European Social Fund within the framework of Project No. 8.3.6.2/17/I/001, “Establishment and Implementation of an Education Quality Monitoring System”.
