Earth Hour 2024
The first Earth Hour took place in 2007, when over 2.2 million residents and 2000 businesses in Sydney turned off their lights for an hour. Currently, Earth Hour is observed worldwide, showing support for mitigating climate change. Latvia also participates. Every year during this hour, a portion of dust settles in darkness, and lighting is turned off or reduced at public buildings such as Riga Castle, Freedom Monument, Vansu and Railway Bridges, House of the Blackheads, and others.
During Earth Hour, lights are turned off both in people's homes and public places, drawing public attention. The more of us join this hour, the sooner we will realize that our world needs protection, that mass extinction of species and various disasters increasingly affecting the world demand urgent action. This one hour is symbolic, but each of us can engage in saving the planet by changing habits and living in harmony with nature within our means. If everyone acted this way, we would discover that such actions are not difficult.
