Christmas cards: past or present?
You will agree that searching for gifts for those dearest to us, the rustling of wrapping paper, the familiar Frank Sinatra song “Let It Snow” playing in the background, and the delicious scent of gingerbread are all wonderful ways to immerse ourselves in a winter fairy tale. Those who have little helpers at home are the luckiest—they can cut out paper snowflakes and make carnival costumes, return to their childhood, and share in the anticipation of miracles. Magical—simply wonderful! Ah yes, special attention is also given to the greeting card—it can be humorous, bring a smile, evoke warm and fond memories, and also serve as a New Year’s greeting! Do you know when the first greeting card appeared? Here are a few interesting facts about them:
The first and most expensive Christmas card
In the past, during the holiday season, letters were sent to family and friends announcing one’s New Year’s plans and conveying warm greetings. One day, in 1843, an Englishman named Henry Cole came up with the idea of sending a card with a short greeting along with the letter: “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You!” He asked the artist John Horsley for help, and Horsley painted Cole’s family raising their glasses in celebration of the holiday. One thousand copies were produced. Cole sold in his shop the cards that were not sent to family or friends.
On 24 November 2001, such a card was sold to an anonymous buyer at an auction in London for 28,000 dollars.
Have classic cards become outdated? 6.5 billion cards a year!
It may seem that, because of the rapid growth of technology and the popularity of social networks, printed materials—and cards in particular—have lost their relevance and now merely gather dust on shop shelves. However, Americans alone purchase approximately 6.5 billion cards a year. Statistics estimate that women buy 80% of the cards.
Signed: Your mother, father and … Bobik?
Yes, indeed! Approximately 70% of families consider their pet a full-fledged family member and, when signing a card, also mention the name of their beloved dog or even guinea pig.
